Search Engines

Below are a number of search engines that offer alternatives to more popular interfaces such as Google, Yahoo!, and Ask.com. Included are a number of search engines that offer features such as customizable searches, visual interfaces, and advanced Boolean operators. Some of the sites below also allow users to search using more than one search engine at a time.

Clusty
Results of this search engine are grouped into subtopics or keywords which can help further focus your query. By clicking on the keyword, the results are reordered showing websites that focus on that subtopic. Click on the magnifying glass on the right hand side of the results to see a preview of each page.

Exalead
Results are displayed in a list format with a thumbnail preview of each webpage. This engine is great for advanced searchers as it allows Boolean operators including NEAR and NEXT. Users can also refine their search by site and domain type (i.e. .org, .edu, .com) and limit results to PDFs, Word documents, Power Point presentations, and other file types. Exalead’s excellent multimedia and image search can be refined by size, file type, and orientation. Users can even create accounts to save sites and pictures. Customizable portals allow access to other search engines.

SpaceTime
All results are organized in a scrolling image display of each webpage. SpaceTime allows you to toggle back and forth between the search results featured on Google, Wikipedia, Amazon, and Answers.com. Results can also be limited to images.

Nexplore
Nexplore’s three search-result display options (summary view, gallery view and line view) and three website preview options (thumbnail preview, window preview and pane preview) allows users to personalize their search. Further options for even more personalization allow users to limit results to podcasts, blogs, the news, videos, and images. Individual accounts allow users to save or discard results.

MelZoo
The results of your search appear in a column on the left. By clicking on or by moving to an entry, a preview of the page appears on the right. Me1Zoo is an excellent way for getting a sense of the breadth of information available as well as for deciding whether or not to visit a page.

Trovando
Access multiple search engines, tools, and reference sources.
